TRAZIA

“Trazia!” someone yells from downstairs. Angry footsteps grow louder as the person makes their way upstairs. In a matter of seconds, Camden is slamming my bedroom door open. He’s still wearing his kit from practice, even down to his boots.

Blaire’s hand tightens in mine when she sees the look on Camden’s face. My usually fun-loving brother looks as if he ran here from the soccer field in a fit of fury. His breathing is labored, face red.

“Camden, now isn’t a good time,” Blaire tells him. She and I have been tucked under the covers since Maddox stormed off. After my calls went directly to voicemail, I gave up trying to reach him. He needs time to process the secrets I’ve been keeping from him, and I’m not sure how long that will take, but I’m willing to give him as much time as he needs.

My brother ignores her. “Want to explain to me why Maddox bailed on practice, and when I asked him what’s going on, he told me to talk to you? Have something to tell me? And why aren’t you at your appointment?”

Shit. With everything going on, I completely forgot that my appointment was soon. There is no way I can be there in this state, especially not without talking to Maddox first.

“Honey, I really think this conversation needs to happen later. Trazia is going through something right now⁠—”

“It’s okay.” I cut her off. “He needs to know.”

Camden takes a cautious step forward. “Know what?”

Sitting up against the headboard, I release Blaire’s hand and pull the comforter closer to my body. It covers Bean, and part of me hopes that if he can’t see my baby bump, maybe breaking this news to him will be easier.

“The father found out today. About the baby.”

Camden’s jaw slacks, and he rubs his stubble with the palm of his hand. “Well, that’s good. How did he take it?”

Holding the covers tighter against me, I try to protect Bean as best I can from the wrath of their uncle that is about to be unleashed. “It’s Maddox.”

Blaire goes completely still beside me as Camden’s eyebrows pull together, and he looks at me as if I just asked him to do long division. “Come again?”

“Maddox. He’s Bean’s father and he found out today.”

Camden takes a ragged breath through his nose and releases it slowly. “Really don’t give a shit if he found out right now. How in the hell is Maddox Stone the father of your baby?”

My chest grows heavy as I try to focus on my breathing. “Spring break. It was stupid, Camden. We…we had a drunken hookup, and Maddox doesn’t even remember⁠—”

“Did he take advantage of you?” Camden’s hands are balled into fists at his sides. His eyes are dark, almost black, as he asks his question.

“God, no. He would never do anything like that.”

Camden throws his hands up in the air. “Not sure I know anymore, Traz. Apparently, I don’t know my best friend at all, seeing as he is the father of my niece or nephew.
